Max Klein, born in 1992 in Siegburg, studied Sustainable Design in Cologne. He currently lives and works in Hamburg, where he focuses on surreal painting. He is being supervised by Christian Hahn and Bernd Mölck-Tassel as part of the Master's degree course in Illustration at the HAW Hamburg University of Applied Sciences.
Max Klein's pictorial worlds are surrealistic dream images in the style of fantastic realism. He assembles everyday objects, such as parts of plants, into new, magical figures. In the spirit of the Surrealists, he follows the method of automatism, allowing the unconscious to emerge. Only when reason falls asleep do monsters become visible.
In a processual manner, pictorial worlds are constructed that encourage the viewer to engage in imaginative pursuits and to stimulate cognitive processes. Concurrently, his oeuvre interrogates the human relationship with the natural world in a distinctive manner.
